What are quartz countertops?

Quartz countertops are engineered stone surfaces made from about 90 percent ground natural quartz bound with resin and pigment. They are non-porous, never need sealing, and resist scratches and stains. In Canada they typically cost $80 to $140 CAD per square foot installed, and a standard kitchen is templated, fabricated and installed within about a week.

  • Quartz countertops in Canada typically cost between $80 and $140 CAD per square foot installed.
  • Engineered quartz is roughly 90 percent ground natural quartz combined with about 10 percent resin and pigment.
  • Quartz is non-porous and never requires sealing, unlike natural granite or marble.
  • A standard Canadian kitchen is templated, fabricated and installed within 7 to 10 days.
  • Quartz resin can be damaged by heat above roughly 150 degrees Celsius, so trivets are required for hot cookware.
  • Countertop Canada Co. installs quartz with a lifetime manufacturer warranty and a 2-year installation guarantee.

Why choose this service

What quartz countertops gets you.

01

Never needs sealing

Quartz is non-porous, so soap and water is the whole maintenance routine. There is no annual sealing to remember and nowhere for bacteria or stains to soak in.

02

Consistent slab to slab

Because it is engineered, the pattern you approve is the pattern you receive. No surprise pits, fissures or wild colour shifts between the sample and the slab that arrives.

03

Marble looks without marble worries

Modern Calacatta and Statuario quartz patterns give you the soft veining of marble on a surface that will not etch from a lemon or stain from red wine.

04

Harder than most kitchens need

Quartz sits around 7 on the Mohs scale, so everyday knives, pans and grit will not scratch it under normal use. Always cut on a board, but a slip will not mark it.

05

A fixed written price

We quote a number after templating and invoice that number. Anything that changes the scope needs your written approval first.

06

You approve before you pay

You walk the installed kitchen with our crew, and only once you have signed off is the final payment due.

Why quartz became the default Canadian countertop

Quartz is engineered stone: roughly ninety percent ground natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, pressed and cured into a slab. That manufacturing is exactly why it has taken over Canadian kitchens. It is non-porous, so it never needs sealing and does not harbour bacteria; it is consistent, so the slab in the showroom is the slab that arrives; and it is hard enough to shrug off the daily abuse a family kitchen delivers.

Where a natural stone gives you one-of-a-kind movement along with the odd surprise, quartz gives you predictability. If you want the calm veining of Calacatta marble without ever thinking about a red-wine ring again, a marble-look quartz is the surface that lets you stop worrying and start cooking.

What fabrication actually involves

A countertop is only as good as its seams, its cutouts and its edges, and all three are decided in the shop, not the showroom. We digitally template your kitchen once the cabinets are set, then cut the slab on a CNC saw and a bridge saw so the layout puts seams where they are least visible and least stressed. Sink and cooktop cutouts are machined, not hand-cut, and the edge profile is ground and polished to the finish you chose.

Cold joints, lippage at the seam and a sink cutout that chips within a year are all fabrication failures, not material failures. This is where a proper shop earns its price.

Living with quartz

Day to day, quartz asks almost nothing of you. Soap and water is the entire maintenance routine — no annual sealing, no special stone cleaner. The one genuine limit is heat: the resin that binds quartz can scorch, so a trivet under a hot pan is not optional. Direct afternoon sun through a large south-facing window can also fade some pigments over many years, which matters for a peninsula under a skylight more than for a galley.

The process

Step by step, start to sign-off.

STEP 01

Measure and slab selection

We take rough measurements, help you choose a colour and pattern, and confirm edge profile and sink type. You can view and reserve the exact slab at our supplier.

STEP 02

Digital template

Once your cabinets are set and level, we laser-template the kitchen so seams, overhangs and the wall scribe are exact rather than estimated.

STEP 03

CNC fabrication

The slab is cut on a CNC saw and bridge saw. Seam placement is planned for the least visible, least stressed location, and cutouts are machined for the sink and cooktop.

STEP 04

Edge and polish

Your chosen edge — eased, bevel, bullnose, ogee or a mitred waterfall — is ground and polished to a consistent finish across every run.

STEP 05

Removal and install

We remove the old countertops, dry-fit the new pieces, then set, level, seam and secure them. Seams are colour-matched and drawn tight.

STEP 06

Seal points and sign-off

Seams and the sink are sealed, the surface is cleaned, and you walk the kitchen with the crew before the job is signed off and the warranty begins.

★★★★★
We had quartz installed across the whole kitchen and the result is better than we expected. The crew templated with a laser, the seam on the island is genuinely hard to find, and the price on the invoice was exactly what we were quoted. Clean, careful and on time.

I was worried about where the two pieces of quartz would meet and honestly you have to know where to look. They colour-matched it and drew it tight. The sink cutout is crisp and the edges are perfect. Would use them again without hesitation.

A full quartz kitchen with an island, templated on a Monday and installed the following Tuesday. No fuss, no surprises, and they took the old laminate tops away. The kitchen looks like a different room and it was done in a week.

Questions

Quartz Countertops: common questions

How much do quartz countertops cost in Canada?

Most Canadian kitchens land between $80 and $140 CAD per square foot installed, which works out to roughly $2,800 to $6,500 for an average kitchen. The number moves with the brand and colour of quartz, the edge profile, the number of cutouts, and whether you add a waterfall end or a large island. We give one fixed written price after templating.

Do quartz countertops need to be sealed?

No. Quartz is non-porous, so unlike granite and marble it never needs sealing. Everyday cleaning is soap and water or a mild surface cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents, which can dull the polish over time.

Can you put a hot pan on quartz?

Not directly. The resin binder in quartz can scorch or discolour under high heat, so always use a trivet or pad for pots straight off the stove or oven. This is the one real limitation of quartz compared with granite, which tolerates heat better.

Is quartz better than granite?

Neither is universally better. Quartz wins on consistency and zero maintenance and is the safer choice for a busy family kitchen. Granite wins on heat tolerance and gives you a genuinely one-of-a-kind natural stone. If you want to never think about your counters again, quartz is usually the answer.

How long does quartz installation take?

From template to install is typically seven to ten days, with the fabrication happening in the shop during that window. The install itself is usually a single day for an average kitchen. Larger kitchens with an island or multiple seams can take a little longer.

Will my quartz have visible seams?

Most kitchens need at least one seam because slabs have a maximum size. A good fabricator places seams where they are least visible and least stressed, and colour-matches the joint so it reads as a fine line rather than a gap. Busy patterned quartz hides seams better than a plain solid colour.

Does quartz fade in sunlight?

Some quartz pigments can fade over many years under constant direct UV, which is why manufacturers advise against outdoor use. For an indoor kitchen it is rarely an issue, though a peninsula directly under a large skylight is worth discussing at the template.

What edge profiles are available on quartz?

The common profiles are eased (a near-square edge with the sharpness taken off), bevel, bullnose, ogee, and a mitred build-up for a thicker look or a waterfall end. Eased and a small bevel are the most popular in modern Canadian kitchens. There is no extra material cost for a standard edge.
