Why quartz became the default Canadian countertop
Quartz is engineered stone: roughly ninety percent ground natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, pressed and cured into a slab. That manufacturing is exactly why it has taken over Canadian kitchens. It is non-porous, so it never needs sealing and does not harbour bacteria; it is consistent, so the slab in the showroom is the slab that arrives; and it is hard enough to shrug off the daily abuse a family kitchen delivers.
Where a natural stone gives you one-of-a-kind movement along with the odd surprise, quartz gives you predictability. If you want the calm veining of Calacatta marble without ever thinking about a red-wine ring again, a marble-look quartz is the surface that lets you stop worrying and start cooking.
What fabrication actually involves
A countertop is only as good as its seams, its cutouts and its edges, and all three are decided in the shop, not the showroom. We digitally template your kitchen once the cabinets are set, then cut the slab on a CNC saw and a bridge saw so the layout puts seams where they are least visible and least stressed. Sink and cooktop cutouts are machined, not hand-cut, and the edge profile is ground and polished to the finish you chose.
Cold joints, lippage at the seam and a sink cutout that chips within a year are all fabrication failures, not material failures. This is where a proper shop earns its price.
Living with quartz
Day to day, quartz asks almost nothing of you. Soap and water is the entire maintenance routine — no annual sealing, no special stone cleaner. The one genuine limit is heat: the resin that binds quartz can scorch, so a trivet under a hot pan is not optional. Direct afternoon sun through a large south-facing window can also fade some pigments over many years, which matters for a peninsula under a skylight more than for a galley.
